Legal Chair

The Family Connection Inc. is currently accepting applications for a Board of Directors position focused on Legal expertise to help strengthen our governance, ensure compliance, and support youth and families through informed legal guidance and community referrals.

About Board Service

Serving on the Board of Directors is an opportunity to provide leadership, oversight, and strategic guidance in support of the organization’s mission to equip older foster youth and families with the resources needed for long-term success. Board members serve in a governance capacity and do not participate in daily operations.

Role Focus

The Legal Chair provides strategic legal insight to support the mission and long-term sustainability of The Family Connection Inc. This role ensures the organization maintains strong governance practices, understands legal risk, and operates in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The Legal Chair serves as a trusted advisor to the Board and Executive Leadership on legal and policy matters that impact youth services and nonprofit operations.

Key Areas of Contribution
  • Advise the Board on legal and regulatory compliance

  • Review and provide guidance on organizational policies and contracts

  • Support risk management and governance best practices

  • Serve as a referral source by identifying and connecting eligible youth and families to services

  • Provide insight on matters affecting youth and families

  • Assist with legal considerations related to programs, partnerships, and growth

  • Help identify when outside legal counsel is needed

Ideal Experience
  • Licensed attorney in good standing

  • Background in family law, child welfare, or youth advocacy preferred

  • Experience with nonprofit governance or board service is a plus

  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations affecting youth-serving organizations

  • Strong ethical judgment and ability to translate legal concepts into practical guidance

  • Established professional network that can support appropriate referrals

  • Passion for improving outcomes for youth transitioning from foster care

Board Commitment
  • Attend and actively participate in scheduled board meetings

  • Serve on relevant committees as needed

  • Provide timely legal insight when issues arise

  • Actively support referral efforts and community partnerships

  • Support fundraising and ambassador efforts for the organization

  • Uphold fiduciary duties of care, loyalty, and obedience

  • Service in a volunteer, leadership capacity
